A delightful and memorable family walk is from Merry Cottage to the Yew Tree Cauldon Low. There is something for all ages to enjoy. This walk is particularly recommended in February, when the snowdrops are in flower.
Leave the cottage continuing along Portland Place until you reach Waterfall Lane and turn left along the lane until you come to the main Leek road. On your right you will notice some quirky wrought iron characters complete with scarves and caps in front of the cottage. At the junction turn left along the main road. After a few minutes you will pass the chip shop on the opposite side of the road. Cross over the road and continue until you reach the war memorial. Immediately turn right and make your way along the public footpath that takes you up the hill. You may be greeted by some friendly horses on your right. Continue on your walk and you will pass through a traditional farmyard complete with barn, chickens, cockerel and sheep dog. This scene reminds you of an idyllic countryside setting from a children’s storybook. Continue past the barn following the footpath. Take in the views on both sides particularly the remains of the quarry pit, now a wonderful lake setting which is part of a nature reserve complete with viewing areas for many types of birds. Summer blackberry pickers will enjoy this spot. Continue along the path and in February enjoy a sparkling display of snowdrops. These are glorious swathes and certainly not to be missed. They line the footpath in copious clumps. When you have recovered from their stunning beauty, make your way to where the footpath meets the road and turn left. This will take you to the famous Yew Tree Cauldon Low pub which will take you right back to the 17th century. Enter; sign the visitor’s book and marvel at the antique treasures within. Too many to list, but certainly unique. Enjoy a traditional drink and have a bite to eat. You will need to recover from the wonder of your walk. The rest of the route is easy. You can either return the way you came or continue left past the entrance and walk down past the cement works, which uses the magnificent limestone of the Peak District in their process. This road winds down to your left to link up with the village of Waterhouses. Turn right along the main Leek road and make your way to Waterfall Lane some distance on your right. Follow the lane and turn back to Portland Place, past the village bowling green and Merry Cottage is waiting to greet you directly ahead.
